All You Need For A Perfect Trip

A stay at Big Land Fishing Lodge is an extraordinary wilderness fishing adventure. Big Land is located on the southern coast of Labrador, Canada — right beside the mighty Pinware River.

This document gives you the essential details: about the lodge, the region, the river, what to pack, how the packages work, and tips to prepare. If you have questions or special needs (medical, dietary, gear), please let us know in advance.

The 2024 State of Wild Atlantic Salmon Report from the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) highlights Labrador as one of the healthiest Atlantic salmon regions in the world. In 2023, salmon runs there were the strongest recorded in 50 years of monitoring, with both small and large salmon returns at record levels (ASF, 2024).

The Pinware River, part of this thriving Labrador stock, has benefited directly from these exceptional runs. With ICES forecasting continued strong salmon numbers through to 2027, conditions look set to remain excellent for anglers in 2026. Pristine wilderness, crystal-clear water, and abundant fish make the Pinware one of Atlantic Canada’s finest salmon rivers — combining spectacular scenery with some of the best fly fishing anywhere in the North Atlantic.

Historical & Cultural Notes

  • The Labrador region was visited by European fishermen (including Basque, French, Portuguese) along the Strait of Belle Isle as early as the 16th century, primarily for cod and whale ventures.
  • Later the salmon fisheries along coastal rivers, including the Pinware (historically sometimes called “River des Francis”) became part of the coastal fishery claims.
  • Over time Labrador’s administration shifted: the coast of Labrador was placed under the Governor of Newfoundland (1763), and subsequent disputations over rights, boundaries, and concessions occurred.
  • Prior to European contact, various Indigenous groups made seasonal use of the coast and interior for fishing, hunting and hunting sea mammals.

Location & Access

  • Region: Southern Labrador, Newfoundland & Labrador province, Canada.
  • Proximity: About 72 km (roughly 60 minutes’ drive) from the Strait of Belle Isle Ferry.
  • Access methods: Guests typically arrive via Goose Bay or Deer Lake. There is a ferry (to Newfoundland or Blanc-Sablon / Labrador coast) and then overland / road transport. The lodge can arrange transfers.

Geography & Environment

Geography & River Details

  • The Pinware River is one of the larger rivers on Labrador’s south coast.
  • Its length is about 108 km, flowing from its source (around 365 m above sea level) down to the Atlantic (Belle Isle Strait) at sea level.
  • Its drainage basin is approximately 2,486 km2.
  • Its course is characterized by mixed terrain: the upper reaches include rapids and steeper gradients, while lower parts are gentler stretches, pools, and runs.
  • Among its tributaries are Beaver Brook, Trout River, Lost River and Western Waters.
  • It is considered “nival” in hydrology — meaning snowmelt contributes heavily to its flow in spring/early summer.
  • The region is part of the southern Labrador coastal zone, where forests (mainly spruce, fir) give way to more rugged, sparse terrain toward the coast. Glacial features and rugged bedrock are common, with exposed rock, boulders and ridges.

Fishing & Fish Species

One of the major draws of Big Land Lodge is Atlantic salmon fishing, along with opportunities for other species.

The lodge emphasises catch-and-release. In addition to Atlantic salmon, species you may encounter include:

  • Sea-run brook trout / native brook trout
